Chinese have contributed much to Guyana’s development

-PM at 7th day of Chinese New Year celebration
PRIME Minister Samuel Hinds joined with  China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Yu Wenzhe and the Chinese community as they celebrated the seventh day of the Chinese New Year at the Chinese Association on Brickdam on Sunday evening.
In his address, the prime minister recalled that Chinese people came to Guyana nearly 160 years ago, during colonial times, and have since made great contributions to the country’s development.
“I want to extend our congratulations to the Government and people of China for their great achievements over the last 100 years, which have come as a result of their hard work and sacrifice,” he said.
He also expressed government’s appreciation for the support that Guyana has been receiving over the years from the People’s Republic of China, and extended a warm welcome to the Chinese nationals who will be coming here to undertake various construction projects expected to kick off before the end of the year.

For his part, Ambassador Wenzhe expressed his gratitude to the government for its support and assistance to the Chinese community in Guyana.

He noted that as one of the six ethnic groups, the Chinese community has formed an integral part of Guyana history and culture, and he expressed the hope for deepened Guyana-China relations.
On January 23, the Chinese Embassy in Guyana hosted its inaugural New Year Fair on the tarmac of the National Park, to mark the occasion of the Year of the Dragon.
The Chinese who arrived as indentured immigrants to Guyana in 1853 have made their mark in the medical field, in commerce, mining, politics, music and education.
