POLICE yesterday said that the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation after one of 137 packets of cocaine went missing from an active court case while in police custody as exhibits.
On Friday last, ten police ranks from the Narcotics Branch and the Tactical Services Unit, headed by an officer, uplifted 137 packets of cocaine from Police Headquarters to be escorted to Bartica.
This was in relation to the trial of five men charged following the seizure of a quantity of cocaine in a boat at Batavia Island, Cuyuni River, in June last year.
The case was called and postponed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, following which the cocaine was escorted back to Police Headquarters. At the time of recounting while the cocaine exhibits were being lodged at headquarters, one packet containing approximately 1 kilogram of cocaine was found to be missing.
The police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is conducting investigations into the matter.
