Tapakuma still under siege by jaguars

THE Essequibo Coast community of Tapakuma village, located some 20 miles from Anna Regina, continues to be under siege from jaguars. The village Toshao, Ms Doreen Jackobus, is calling on the police to shoot or capture these dangerous animals because residents, especially children, are terrified by the jaguars.
According to Toshoa Jackobus, one of the jaguars attacked another dog in the village on Monday, but could not kill it because residents fought off the jaguar and saved the dog. Nevertheless, the jaguar’s paw seriously damaged one of the dog’s eyes.
Jackobus said that, on another night, a jaguar which averaged in excess of 150 pounds climbed up to a verandah of a house and searched for a dog that normally sleeps there. The dangerous animal also scraped the door with its paws after smelling humans in the house. However, the door was tightly locked, and the animal abandoned its enterprise and disappeared into the dark night. The jaguars have so far killed and eaten more than 25 dogs and one sheep.
