It is never wise to rejoice in the misery of others, but in this case I am filled with a sense of satisfaction. The case I am referring to is that of the local contracting firm, BK International and its Chief Executive Officer, Brian Tiwari, moving to the High Court, seeking damages in excess of $100,000 from the National Media and Publishing Company Limited, Publisher of the Kaieteur News. This suing issue has its genesis in a letter titled “Brian Tiwari – Golden Arrow of cheating”. So I guess my joy, irrespective of how the legal matter turns out, is a deserved one, and I have reasons for this feeling.
First, Kaieteur News has been playing the devil with too many people. Its column, “Dem Boys Seh” is tantamount to a school yard ‘cuss’ out. It is most insulting, and calls for nothing of intelligence and skill. “Dem Boys Seh” is a cesspool of faeces. The ‘thing’ lacks literary skills – it is bereft of anything risible and is more like trying to ‘crack a joke’. What irks me, though, is how disrespectful the childish name-calling really is.
I remember, just in the recent past, a Kaieteur News’ front page picture. It carried the wedding photo of the president and Ms. Varshnie Singh. There and then, I lost all respect for these ‘entertainers’. That was like saying to someone, that ‘it good yuh muddah dead’. I am personally unhappy with the ‘good’ treatment this government is meting out to this newspaper. The good public has tolerated it for too long. So this ‘suing’ issue is good. It adds to the Freddie Kissoon/Jagdeo one, and I can see a few more in the offing.
So as the writ says (that Tiwari, through his attorney Vidyanand Persaud, is claiming that statements contained in the article constitute an atrocious libel which is wholly unjustified and which will inflict serious and irreparable injury to him and his company) and all that it implies, this matter is most grave. I am not legally disposed, but I remember how one Sasenarine did the same kind of nonsense with the PPP/C, particularly President Jagdeo. Kaieteur News played smart. It printed the letter, then apologised and withdrew. To me, the damage was done, not to mention deliberate.
So again, I repeat – 50 times over, that Kaieteur News deserves to be dragged over the coals.
