HOST Club Net Rockers rocked past Eagles United 4-1 to capture Net Rockers/Upper Demerara Football Federation Under-15 League championship when the teams met in the final last Saturday at the Wisburg Secondary School ground. They finished as the only team with an unbeaten record with three wins while Eagles United, though unbeaten, had two wins and a draw.
Additional points were awarded for teams accordingly who participated at the official march past of teams at the opening ceremony.
Net Rockers put on a fine showing with good organisational skills culminating with Shane Lucky scoring the opening goal in the 18th minute.
This was facilitated through a blunder by the Eagles goalkeeper who could not hold on to a shot from the promising Net Rockers midfield player Anthony Layne.
Among the individual prizes at stake was the one for Most Goals of the tournament and Layne took the lead with his third of the tournament in the 33rd minute.
Two minutes later Shane Lucky matched Layne’s tally when he registered a left-foot shot from just inside the 18 yards box to give him his third of the tournament as the eventual winners closed the first half with a 3-0 cushion over their archrivals.
As was expected solid defending by the ‘twin towers’ Troy ‘Bad Boy’ Lewis and Mark McLean kept the Eagles at bay in the first half, but complacency early in the second half resulted in Troy Lewis being dispossessed and he reverted to fouling the dangerous Donavon Francis in the goal area.
The Eagles team captain then made no mistake from the penalty spot to score and pull one back in the 41st minute.
However, it was too late for the Eagles and Troy Lewis spectacularly found the back of the net with a free kick from on top the halfway line to make up for his earlier blunder.
His cannon sealed the victory for the host side and a tournament championship in fine style.
In the supporting third place playoff game Amelia’s Ward defeated Milerock 2-0.
All presentations will be made at a special ceremony on Saturday at the Wisburg ground at 16:00hrs where the winners, runners-up and other individual prizes will be distributed
The organisers wish to thank the sponsors Farfan and Mendes Ltd, B. Harry’s Lumberyard, Snooks Variety Store, Figgies Groceries and Bar, the president and secretary of the UDFA and all participating teams for their sterling contributions in making this tournament a reality.
It is also the hope and wish of the Net Rockers Football Club that they could partner with corporate sponsors to continue to nurture the wealth of talent that was discovered during the tournament so that they can grow to make Linden and Guyana as a whole proud.
