THE standing joke on me is that all those kids under the age of 10 can outrun me in a 100m race. I admit that is indeed so and I make reference to the just concluded 51st National Track and Field Championships held at the National Stadium. It is always a joy for me to witness all 10 regions of Guyana being represented at such a prestigious meet.
I say to all those athletes, I am very proud of your performances and you must also be proud of yourselves. It’s an achievement to qualify and compete at the country’s highest track meet and continue to improve with your preparations for the next meet.
To those who may go further to represent the Golden Arrowhead, I would merely suggest that you represent the flag as disciplined sports ambassadors before, on and after the track. In many ways, there is a possibility that with such behaviour you could very well attract a lot more of sponsorship and endorsements from the local business community along with recommendations.
Having attended both the swimming and track aspects of nationals, over four hundred (400) photo images were taken and if there is anyone from any of the 10 regions of Guyana who may have an interest in viewing the images it’s free of cost and you can make contact via the editors’ columns of the four daily newsprints.
Concerning the controversies that clouded the events, they didn’t come as a shocker to me and my focus was mainly on the competition events. The one shocker was when a “Lucozade glass bottle” showered down from the top of the stadium and landed on the ground in front of me and broke into many pieces. That was when I was on a break during the long pause of the final day outside of the seating area. I simply looked up, shook my head and moved away. I left wondering since when do we allow glass bottled beverages at such events? I always thought it was plastic bottled beverage/s that should be sold. Maybe I am just behind the times.
I say publicly to the organising committee of the 51st National Track and Field Championships, it is my expectation that you review your preparation planning for the 2012 meet. That is, if it will be kept again at the Guyana National Stadium.
