THE Indian High Commission in Guyana celebrated India’s 70th Republic Day on Saturday, at the residence of High Commissioner Venkatachalam Mahalingam in Happy Acres, on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

Republic Day is celebrated to mark the day when the Indian Constitution came to force. On November 26, 1949, the constitution was adopted which came into force on January 26, 1950, marking the beginning of a new era in the history of India.

The simple ceremony in Guyana began with the hoisting of the Indian flag and a few cultural presentations.
