THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has received a tractor and two skip bins that will assist the Solid Waste Management Department to remove bulky and parapet waste.
The tractor and skip bins cost around $20M and are part of a $200M grant to the municipality in 2017, of which $75M was for the Solid Waste Department.

The tractor and two skip bins would aid the municipality to remove bulky waste expeditiously

According to director of that department Walter Narine, the remaining sums would be used to purchase a garbage truck which should be procured early in 2019.
“On behalf of the Georgetown Municipality, I would like to sincerely thank Minister Ronald Bulkan and the Government of Guyana for this timely donation to our municipality. These equipment will assist greatly with our solid waste collections and will bring great relief to our citizens. I anxiously await the delivery of the garbage truck now as my 2019 Valentine’s gift,” Narine stated on a social media post.

Sales Manager Mohamed Ally from GENEQUIP (General Equipment Guyana Limited) was on hand earlier this week to hand over the tractor and skip bins to Narine and Acting Town Clerk Sharon Harry at City Hall.

Ally said the tender was awarded to his company by the Ministry of Communities.
Narine said at the handing over that because there is a lot of bulky waste on the parapets like old fridges, stoves, wood and trees, the new equipment would allow for their removal expeditiously.

These kind of materials could not fit in the regular garbage trucks and hence the 10×6 skip bins would be able to remove them efficiently.

“It will aid in bringing in revenue to the municipality. If someone has bulky waste and needs collection, they will have to call us, visit City Hall to pay $5000 and then show us the receipt. We are also working with the Engineer’s Department. A new builder is coming on board who wants to store materials, so he will rent those bins from the municipality,” Narine explained.

He said the equipment will also help to remove parapet waste in the communities and that if there are any clean up campaigns, the bins will be readily available for rental.
