GCC defeat GDF by six wickets in 40-over cricket

THE GEORGETOWN Cricket Club (GCC) registered a six-wicket win against the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) when action in the New Building Society (NBS) 2nd Division 40-overs cricket tournament continued on Sunday at the Bourda ground.
The GCC bowlers did the damage early before a solid start by the home team openers created the impetus for the victory.

The army cricketers did not capitalise on winning the toss, as they lost their first three wickets for 17 runs.
A fifth-wicket partnership of 38, between the in-form Damian Waldron and Jeremiah Harris gave the visitors a few overs of hope. Waldron struck two sixes and a four in a score of 34, while Harris, who hit two fours and a six, remained unbeaten on 31.

Left-arm spinner Devon Lord, who got Waldron caught behind, helped to clean up the tail as the last five wickets fell for 20 runs to leave the visitors on 109 in 34.1 overs.
The GCC captain finished with 3-14 from eight overs (including four maidens), while opening bowlers Bernard Bailey and West Indies U-19 cricketer Ronaldo Ali-Mohamed supported with two wickets each.

Needing to score at just 2.75 runs per over, the home team openers started positively. They pushed the score to 54 in the eighth over before Martin Pestano-Belle was bowled. The GCC opener hit three sixes and two fours in his score of 35 off 33 balls.
Khemraj Jaikarran, who scored two fours, added 25 runs off 31 balls, while T. McAlmont added 18, all three became victims of off-spinner Waldron.

Although Waldron took 3-13 from seven overs, defending a small total was always going to be a difficult task. But an unbeaten partnership between Deonarine Seegobin (19) and Chetram Persaud (5) carried the team to victory in 22.3 overs.
