GUYANESE Papo Haniff who plays out of Trinidad and Tobago and Christine Sukhram were crowned men’s and women’s champions at last weekend’s R1Vodka Guyana Open two-day golf championships played at the Lusignan Golf Club. Haniff won the men’s championship with an overall 148 gross competing in the 0-9 flight.
He was in tremendous form on the opening day on Saturday and returned on day two to leave the other contestants lagging behind including three-time winner Avinash Persaud who failed to end among the top five golfers this year in a disappointing showing.
Mohanlall Dinnanaith secured the second position with gross 153.
Three players ended on 156 gross but Sookram Deosarran finished third on the countback with Vijay Deo occupying the fourth position while Avinda Kishore was fifth.
Vijay also carted off the men’s best net of 138 in all flights and best net of 67 on day two.
Fazil Haniff won the best gross of 80 and the best net of 69 in the 10-18 flight while Clifford Reis won the 19-28 handicap flight on day two with the lowest gross of 88 and best net of 66.
In the ladies’ competition, Sukhram continued her dominance beating three other opponents to come out on top with 164 gross.
Second position was taken by Surinamese Petra Beems who ended on 185 while Guyanese Joaan Deo was third with 196.
President of the Lusignan Golf Club, Brian Hackett, thanked Banks DIH for sponsoring the tournament for another year.
Carlton Joao, Banks DIH Sales and Marketing Executive said he was pleased with the turnout of players.
He congratulated the outstanding players for their excellent showing in the two-day event.
The tournament attracted players from the United States, Canada, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and French Guiana.
