RAJ Bahadoor, a pensioner of Lot 91 Lowland Hope, East Coast Demerara, has reported that for sometime now residents in the area have been receiving damaged and torn mails, and also complained about the shabby service received by pensioners at the Melanie Post Office.
The 71-year-old during a visit to the Guyana Chronicle, said that he received a torn and damaged envelope which contained a birthday card sent from the U.S. by his daughter on October 14, 2011 at 09:26 hrs.
He explained that the birthday card was intact but the envelope was badly damaged as if someone had deliberately opened it to check for money and on the envelope itself it can clearly be seen that the original date of delivery of the mail in Guyana was stamped over to a later date.
Bahadoor had also brought the card and envelope to show this reporter and added too, that only when the postal workers have to deliver utility bills they serve the area with mails.
He said that the postal workers also sit on their bicycles while delivering mails and they have to leave the comfort of their homes to go outside and collect the mails adding to his displeasure, because he has a mailbox at his gate.
In response, the Post Master General Henry Dundas, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that, he can offer no comment at this time with regard to the damaged and torn mail delivered to Bahadoor but will do so at an opportune time after an investigation.
As it relates to the delivery of mails by postal workers to residents, he stated that, once there are no dogs posing a threat to them mails must be delivered to mail boxes.
Meanwhile, Bahadoor also expressed his concern at the attitude and behaviour of the current Post Mistress at the Melanie Post Office, East Coast Demerara, as it relates to pensioners collecting their old age money via the post office on a monthly basis.
Giving one of many examples, Bahadoor said that when he requested his coins, the Post Mistress got really angry because she does not pay pensioners any coins stating that, she does not have any.
He said that the plight of the elderly is most atrocious since they have to wait for hours when collecting their monies at that post office because the post mistress there would have to chat, comb her hair among other things.
He noted that if they object she is very rude to them and they would have to wait even longer for service and asks that the matter be addressed promptly to bring relief to pensioners.
Dundas said that the matter will be investigated and as such the necessary actions will follow.
