GOLD production in Guyana was 10.4 per cent above the target up to the end of the 2011 third quarter.
Figures released by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) revealed that a total of 264,741 ounces had been produced by small and medium-scale miners up to September month end.
The target for 2011 is 320,000 ounces and it is very likely to be achieved, given the current rate at which it is being produced, the agency said.
It also reported a notable increase in quarry stone, 335,360 tonnes or 11.8 per cent over target at the third quarter.
Diamonds production was recorded at 40,349 carats or 67 per cent of the 60,000 carats expected this year.
GGMC said, with those statistics, the mining sector is well on its way to making another significant contribution to the annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP). (Clifford Stanley)
