Convicted fraudster back in jail

A 58-year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to three fraud charges.

Raymond Harilall of Eccles Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the fraud charges.

The charges allege that between the months of September and October at Dennis Street, Turkeyen, with intent to defraud, Harilall obtained from Richard Harris $1.7 million by falsely pretending that he was in a position to acquire a loan for the said victim, knowing same to be false.

It was also alleged that between October 3 and October 20, 2018 at Croal Street, Lall incurred a debt of $80,000 by travelling in the motorcar of Travis Fitzpatrick and did not pay. It was further alleged that between 3rd September and October 5, 2018 at Dennis Street, Turkeyen, with intent to defraud, Harilall obtained from Annela Bodram $1.6 million by falsely pretending that he was in a position to acquire a loan for the said victim, knowing same to be false.

The miner pleaded guilty to all three charges that were read out to him in court by the magistrate. He was represented by Attorney Patrice Henry who asked the magistrate to be lenient when passing sentence, since his client did not waste the court’s time and made an early guilty plea.

Harilall was sentence to 18 months imprisonment by the magistrate for the charges. According to reports, Harilall was convicted in 2008 for a similar offence and was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for obtaining over $3M in cash from several persons by fraud.
