Mr. BASIR Bryan Persaud, Coordinator of Region 2 Pomeroon – Supenaam Essequibo Coast has represented the Region 2 administration at the “Amerindian Heritage Celebrations” held in Ackawini Community Pomeroon. Mr. Persaud also had two traditional plants, planted near to the school in dedication to the unprecedented service given to Guyana by President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo. In view of this year’s heritage theme, being the fusion of culture, MR. Persaud also donated several DVDs representing Indo-Guyanese culture. The community gathering of over 300 persons comprising the Toshao, teachers, medical personnel, loggers and fishermen presented a panorama of colours on the 50-foot high land formation interspaced with palm trees.
Mr. Persaud addressing the gathering, mentioned the rapid growth of the Amerindian population of 27,000 in 1957 to 75 thousand in 2011. He said this is due to the PPP/Civic programme of hinterland development, in all aspects of basic needs for these communities. Mr. Persaud catalogued the developments – such as – interior roads, land titles, scholarships, Amerindian Toshaos Council, communication laptops, and agriculture sustainability in 120 odd communities. The PPP/C government welfare to the indigenous community of Guyana is unmatchable. Natives of North America and Canada are far behind that what we have achieved here.
In Region 2, Chairman Ally Baksh who constantly visits all nine communities in Region 2 makes sure that these communities are well serviced. In Mashabo, Capoey, Tapakuma, Mainstay and Siriki Food for the Poor (Guy) has constructed more than 300 homes for these areas. Former Amerindian Affairs Minister, Mrs C. Rodrigues Birkett, has reached unprecedented heights at national and international forums, representing Guyana and is a fine role model for our Amerindian population
Happy Heritage Celebration
