Stabroek Market search yields cocaine on remanded defendant

– Court told
SHERWIN Evans (no address given) was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of trafficking in narcotics.
He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on September 24, he had two grammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, objected to bail on the ground that the legislation does not provide bail for such offence, only if special reasons are given. He said no special reason was given by the defendant.
Harvey said on the day in question a police mobile patrol received certain information and went in the vicinity of Stabroek Market. He said a search was conducted on several persons including the defendant.
The prosecutor said the alleged substance was found in the defendant’s possession.
Evans will make another court appearance on October 18.
