TWO sisters were on Monday slapped with a joint charge of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm upon another woman. Socata Fortune (no address given) appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty. An arrest warrant was issued for Amanda Olliviera, since she was not present in court.
Particulars of the charge stated that the women unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Lolita Rogers.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said on the day in question the virtual complainant was walking when she saw her husband’s bike parked outside of Fortune’s house.
Harvey said Rogers was ‘hanging around’ outside when Fortune and Olliviera came out and an argument ensued. He said Fortune and Olliviera advanced to Rogers with a piece of iron and began hitting her about her body with the iron.
The prosecutor said a report was made and both women were arrested.
Bail was granted to Fortune in the sum of $75,000 and the matter was transferred to Magistrate Fazil Azeez’s court later in the day.
When the case was called before Azeez, the other defendant Olliviera appeared and the arrest warrant was recalled. She, too, was placed on $75,000 bail and the case was fixed for trial on October 14.
