– fire reportedly started by children playing with lighter
A WEST Demerara family of eight is wondering where they will rest their heads after a late Wednesday night fire has rendered them homeless.
According to reports from neighbours, the fire is suspected to have been caused by the children who were playing with a lighter and accidentally set a mattress on fire.
Four persons, including three children were at home at around 21:00hrs when the Lot 250 Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara home went up in flames.
According to neighbours, within an hour, the one-storey, three-bedroom property was flattened.
The fire service was summoned but by the time firefighters arrived, it was too late.
Nicholas Duncan, one of the persons living at the property, recalled he was at the airport sending off his fiancé when he received a call that the house was on fire.
“I left to go the airport, then approximately 9:10pm, I got a call — the building on fire. My brother was at home with the three children. By the time I get back, everything gone, nothing could a save,” Duncan said, as he pondered his next move while lying in a neighbour’s hammock.
Duncan could not estimate their losses but noted that the house was well furnished and nothing was saved.
“Everything, everything just gone. It was a three-bedroom house furnished with everything and so on. It had everything. So far the family, a few of them gone to work, the rest of we, we didn’t sleep last night, we just lime with some friends and family ‘til day clean and I come down here to rest by a family friend’,” he explained
The three children, he said have already been sent to stay with their father, who lives at a different location.
