Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport congratulates Bishoo

THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport wishes to extend heartfelt congratulations to Mr Devendra Bishoo who has won the ICC Emerging Player-of-the-Year 2011.
In a release last evening from Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, the Ministry said Bishoo overcame competition from his team-mate Darren Bravo and the Pakistani pair of Wahab Riaz and Azhar Ali.
During the voting period, Bishoo at age 25, played five Test matches taking 21 wickets at an average of 35.42 during the voting period. He also took 19 wickets in eleven One Day Internationals at an average of 21.51.
Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo who comes from very humble beginnings is dedicated and places much emphasis on physical fitness.
He started his cricket at the tender age of 11 years at the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club.
Because of his outstanding talent, he was quickly spotted and represented Berbice at the U-15, U-17, U-19 and Senior levels.  Devendra was so impressive that he caught the eyes of the National Selectors and was selected to represent Guyana at the U-15, U-19 and Senior levels.
Bishoo continued his dominance in his game and sent a strong message to the West Indies selectors who chose him to play for the West Indies A Team.
In 2011, this astonishing young Guyanese was called to represent the West Indies at the highest level of One Day Internationals – the World Cup.  He made his Test, ODI and T20 debut in 2011.  In his first T20 against Pakistan, he won the Man-of-the-Match Award, having taken four wickets.
Since his elevation to the various categories of cricket, he has stamped his authority and has retained a permanent place in West Indies Cricket. His achievements are for all, especially the youngsters, to emulate.
Congratulations and best wishes to a Champion – Mr Devendra Bishoo.  May his exploits be recorded in our history!
