Remarkable achievement in housing

MY wife and I have over the years travelled to every country in the Caribbean, excluding Cuba, for obvious reasons. We always made it a habit of visiting the villages and hamlets away from the usual tourist habitats. After our recent visit to Guyana, with an absence of about six years, we have to conclude that, overall, Guyanese are better housed than the population of any other territory in the Caribbean.
The present Government of Guyana has given the people what governments all over the world are trying to do and many can’t even scratch the surface as yet -give their people decent living conditions.

I will not touch on the massive buildings, which some claim are the domains of questionable drug lords, but I am talking about the huge housing schemes all across Guyana, where ordinary citizens and workers can own their homes with pride and dignity.

When it comes to housing, Guyana is doing better than many of the governments in the developed world, including the USA. I have seen my own family members who can in no way be categorised as wealthy, living proudly in beautiful and well-built homes that they own.

There is still a far way to go to meet the needs of every Guyanese-but what this government has achieved so far in the field of housing can be described as really remarkable.
