FRANCIS Gonsalves who went berserk recently at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court, was on Monday sentenced to six months imprisonment for his disorderly behaviour and use of indecent language.

On May 3, while making an appearance on another matter, he had allegedly threatened to take his own life, thus sending fear into the magistrate and also staff attached to the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.

Francis was found guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.

According to facts of the matter, on May 3 around 14:30 hours at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court, the labourer was in court on a threatening language and assault charge committed on Susan Smith, when he attempted to end his life. It happened after the charge was read to him and he had pleaded not guilty and was remanded. Upon hearing that, Gonsalves began to hit his head on the prisoner’s dock until blood oozed. Then he attempted to jump through the court’s window and had to be restrained by ranks present at the court.
He was subsequently taken to the Suddie Public Hospital for medical attention.
