Policeman charged with stealing G$2M from detained immigrant

A POLICEMAN appeared in court on Thursday, charged with stealing from a civilian who was in custody.
Avinash Rambarran, 20, of Lot 93 Enmore, East Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated, on July 31, at the Central Immigration and Passport Office, he stole US$10,000 (G$2M) belonging to Jose D’Oliveira Castro.
Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton put the accused on $75,000 bail following an application by defence  counsel Vic Puran.
The lawyer told the Court that Castro was a detained immigrant, who was searched by Rambarran, in the presence of another police rank and made no complaint then, until later when he made the accusation.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said  Castro made the allegation the same night he was arrested.
The case has been transferred to another court for September 20.
