WITH one eye on the inclement weather which has been plaguing Georgetown and some parts of the country for the past four days, defending champions Cellink Berbice and their nemesis Demerara meet in the final round of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Female Inter-county tournament at the Police Sports Club ground today from 09:30hrs. Both teams recorded handsome victories over a hapless-looking Essequibo, with Demerara winning by 283 runs and Cellink Berbice by 248 runs in their respective first-round matches. As a result today’s encounter should be very exciting.
Cellink Berbice will be led by West Indies all-rounder Shemaine Campbelle who made an effortless unbeaten 151 against the Essequibians and will get support from her fellow West Indies teammates in fast bowlers Erva Giddings and Sabrina Munroe and the talented Tremayne Smartt.
Trishanie Cort made a patient half-century against Essequibo while sharing a 207-run fifth-wicket partnership with Campbelle, while Jacqueline Singh, Melanie Henry and Katana Mentore can all contribute heavily with the bat.
Campbelle, Munroe, Smartt, Giddings and 13-year-old spinner Plaffiana Millington will take care of the Ancient County’s bowling attack against a much better Demerara batting lineup, led by West Indies wicketkeeper/batter June Ogle-Thomas who, like Campbelle, struck an unbeaten ton against Essequibo.
Add Onika Wallerson, Abena Parker, Victoria Bacchus, Joan Van Sertima and young Lashauna Toussaint to the Demerara batting lineup and certainly Cellink Berbice, who will be looking to maintain their dominance in local female cricket with another victory, have their work cut out for them.
Wallerson, Van Sertima, Prudence Williams and Akaze Thompson will handle Demerara’s bowling attack against the powerful Berbicians’ batting lineup and with the newly selected national selection panel, led by former fast bowler Reon Griffith on hand to witness the contest, players from both teams will be looking to impress, as they seek a place on the national team.
