CDC distributes food supplies to Kumu village, Region Nine

Director General of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) Colonel R’td Chabilal Ramsarup on Wednesday distributed food supplies to Kumu village, one of several in Region Nine affected by flood in early June as a result of intense rainfall. This is one of many interventions in the recovery phase to assist the residents who were severely hit by flood waters. Residents received a 14 day supply of non-perishable food items which were flown into the area.
Speaking with the residents, Ramsarup recounted the years when Lethem was a thriving farming community, supplying the needs of the region as well as those of Georgetown and neighbouring Brazil. He encouraged them to return to cultivation and to engage in preserving their produce so that they would no longer produce based only on their needs, but on their capabilities as well.
Residents of Region Nine returned to their lives of normalcy since the flood waters receded, prior to which government undertook a number of initiatives for re-integrating them into their homes and communities.(GINA)
