Completion of Saffon Street Bridge project expected by weekend

– Bassoo
THE widening of the Saffon Street bridge in Charlestown to facilitate a link to the four-lane roadway from Broad Street, also in Georgetown, to the East Bank Demerara corridor, is expected to be completed by weekend.

Mr. Roy Bassoo, of R. Bassoo and Sons construction company, made the disclosure yesterday in response to an inquiry by the Guyana Chronicle.
He said, presently, rails are being cast along the route that is being paved and should be open to traffic by Friday or Saturday.
Bassoo said another major aspect of the project was finished recently.
“This structure will be a pre-stress/post tension and we need to drive 80 feet long piles into the ground. All the high-voltage cables will have to be removed,” he explained in February.
At that time, he said Guyana Power & Light (GPL) was in the process of installing new poles, near the bridge, to rewire the grid.
Bassoo said Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) as well as Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) were also cooperating in the venture and the vending stalls had been relocated.
In January, several La Penitence Market vendors moved from along Saffon Street to make way for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funded undertaking that would allow  a significant increase in vehicular traffic. (Telesha Persaud)
