Security guard killed on East Canje road

A  security guard on his way to work  was struck down by a motor lorry ,on the Number Two Road, East Canje, Berbice, at about 19:20 hrs,  just over a hour after he had left his home, on Saturday night.
Ignatius Thomas, 53, succumbed to multiple injuries to his lower extremities, four hours later, despite emergency medical intervention at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

According to an eyewitness, the pedal cyclist was riding across the main thoroughfare when the truck, registered to D Ferdinand, of 51 Stanleytown, drove off its lane, into the path of the cyclist, pinning him under its wheel.
“The cycle was broken in two, and the man’s legs were crushed. He could not survive that accident,” said the eyewitness, who is also a hire car driver.
Meanwhile, Sandra Sookraj, the reputed wife of the deceased, related to this newspaper, from their home at Burn Bushe Dam, East Canje, that he was employed  at David Armagon sawmill, where he worked as a watchman for just over a year.
She said he  had left their home at 18:00hrs for work, a ten minute ride away, and minutes later she was told of the accident.
She was told that he was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted.
In company with neighbours, she went to the health institution, where she was monitored by nurses as her blood pressure level had soared.
At around 23:00hrs she was told of his death.
Sookraj said Thomas was her partner for ten years, and he is survived by his twin brother and two foster children.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck, attached to Home Design and Engineering Company, remains in police custody as investigations continue.
