A FOUR-YEAR-OLD child drowned in a trench, connected to the Hackney Canal, lower Pomeroon River, last Wednesday morning.
Shaskia Alberts had been left in the care of her aunt when the tragedy occurred. The dead girl’s mother, Ebandie Mendonca said her daughter was left with her sister, Hermelda, when she and her husband went to their farm.
The woman said, when they returned home around midday, her sister broke the tragic news to her.
She said Hermelda told her she missed Shaskia about 11:00 h and began a frantic search which ended with the discovery of the dead girl at the bottom of the trench.
Police are investigating the death.
