A sustainable economy is based on a diversified manufacturing base

TO create and sustain a stable and ever-expanding economy, we have to build a strong, diversified manufacturing base. We are richly endowed with natural resources which can create the appropriate base for material prosperity. We have fertile lands, extensive forests, vast mineral resources, mighty rivers and an abundance of fish and other marine resources in our waters. The programme for developing agriculture requires us to do a number of specific things and the Hon Minister of Agriculture Mr. Robert Persaud, is aware of this. He must ensure that rural housing policy integrates housing facilities more closely with farms to improve husbandry practices and increase production of plantains and ground provisions (cassava, yams, eddoes etc.). Expand production of corn and other crops which are used for livestock production.
The link between crops and livestock must be strengthened on every farm. Crops support livestock which in turn provide manure for crops. Produce more market gardening crops e.g. tomatoes, legumes, pepper, pumpkins, etc.Orchards must be re-established  in order to produce more fruits, like mangoes, citrus, bilimbi, carambola, cherries, guava, sapodilla and link  this with the development of the honey industry.
He must rehabilitate the existing coffee and cocoa groves and revive coffee and cocoa production and encourage everybody as he is now doing to plant a kitchen garden or some economic crop or raise some livestock, wherever possible. Ensure every school develops an efficiently organised farm and become fully involved in the agricultural drive. And increase livestock production both in homesteads and in specialised farms. Emphasis should be placed on cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry and rabbits.
Develop more fish farms. The development of aquaculture in the sugar and rice industries has great possibilities and should be pursued. To support these efforts by our farmers and fishermen, the government must ensure that proper marketing arrangements are made including proper pricing policies and a mechanism for prompt payment for produce.
