… looking to start youth programme on return home
FORMER national Under-19 fast bowler Ryan Hercules is enjoying his third season in the Central Yorkshire League division one competitions which have present County and future County players competing for their respective teams. The 23-year-old Hercules, who first represented Guyana at the Under-15 level in 2003, before playing at the Under-19 level for two years in 2005 and 2006, plies his trade for Wakefield St Michaels Cricket Club.
According to Hercules, “The team is a well balanced team with a lot of good players, including Riche Bresnan, the brother of Yorkshire and England’s fast bowler Tim Bresnan, but still lost their first game to Townville Cricket Club.”
Hercules picked up one wicket in the lost encounter to Townville and even though he fared better when he snared 4 for 27 from 15 overs in his second game, his team still lost that match as they dropped five catches.
To date, he has picked up 12 wickets from nine games and batting at number three, has a top score of 91 not out made against Ossett Cricket Club that took his team to victory with two overs to spare, followed by 77 against Wakefield Thorns Cricket Club, who reached 221 for 2 from 35 overs, in reply to Wakefield St Michaels’ 220 for 9.
All told, the right-handed Hercules has aggregated 265 runs, for which he is happy, while offers of transfer to another club are pouring in, following an invitation from England Barnsley Cricket Club, which former national fast bowler Rayon Griffith represented.
“I am training very hard at the club while I am also doing gym work, taking great care of my knee. On August I will be doing my Level 2 coaching course and examinations and when I return to Guyana, I would like to start a programme in my home village of Parika.
“All age groups are welcome to participate in the programme, where I will be teaching the art of cricket and helping them prepare their mind for the game competitively, while they will also be lectured on how to be a good ambassador for their country,” said Hercules.
