-Puts Prime Minister in charge
PRIME Minister, Mr. Samuel Hinds, is to lead a high level delegation into Region Nine to assess the situation there following reports of widespread flooding in the area as a result of recent heavy rainfall.
The intervention is on the express instruction of President Bharrat Jagdeo, who, though is away on government business, has been apprised of the situation and kept up to date from time to time.
The unusually heavy inundation, officials say, is as a result of continuous rainfall in the area over the past few days, which has adversely affected residents in the north and central Rupununi, as well as Lethem.
Said officials, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is on high alert, and will be rushing food and medical supplies to the area to help alleviate the situation. The agency will also continuously assess the situation so as to help keep it in check.
Heavy rains has also reportedly adversely affected the border state of Roraima in neighbouring Brazil, to the extent that it has been forced to declare a state of emergency.
