THE Office of the President has noted the attempt by the Leader of the Opposition PNCR to muzzle the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC). A statement last evening from the Office of the President said, “The PNCR has sought an ex-parte injunction to restrain the ERC from discharging its constitutional mandate. The injunction was granted.
“The public should now know, as the records of the Appointive Commitee of Parliament would attest, that the PNCR has exhibited manifest insincerity in their contributions at meetings of the Appointive Committee addressing the matter of the ERC, the latest of which was held on Tuesday May 31, 2011.
“At no time up to and including Tuesday, May 31, 2011, did the opposition PNCR Members of Parliament on the Committee see it fit to disclose to the Committee members their intention to resort to a court ordered solution, a resort which was initiated formally since May 23, 2011, as revealed in their filed court submissions.
“ Guyanese must repudiate these PNCR opposition efforts to muzzle the ERC, especially at this time of heightened political activities associated with campaigning for the upcoming General and Regional Elections. Moreover, the vast majority of Guyanese would support the contention that the Government of Guyana has made exemplary efforts in discharging its constitutional mandate.
“The injunction that was granted prohibiting the Chairman and the Commissioners of the ERC from functioning is a sad reflex of the deceitful nature of the PNCR, serving to confirm the PNCR’s gross contribution to maintaining the level of distrust that prevails within the body politic of Guyana, “ the statement concluded.
