Rum-drinking wife got vexed, stabbed her husband

LAWYERS for the prosecution and defence counsel in the case in which a wife reportedly confessed to killing her  husband because he refused to purchase more rum for her, and was inclined  to have fun with another lover, will address the jury on Monday.
Defence Counsel Mr. Peter Hugh has already told presiding Judge Miss Dawn Gregory that his client had not made the alleged confession of her own free will, on the ground that the statement was not obtained in accordance with the judge’s rules.
But, after conducting a voir dire ( a trial within a trial ) to determine the issue in the absence of the jury, the judge concluded that the caution statement was freely and voluntarily obtained and directed that it be read to the jury.
The leading prosecutor, Miss Rhondel Weaver, in association with Miss Teshana James, will make her final address to the jury on Monday.
Defence Counsel Peter Hugh will deliver his address on Monday morning. The defence and the prosecution lawyers have all closed their cases.
The accused Jean Lacruz, the judge found, had given a voluntary statement to the police, admitting that she was vexed and, as a consequence, she stabbed her husband, Samkarran Singh, with a small pen-knife..
According to the statement of Jean Lacruz, of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, the accused said that she had made the statement of her own  free will.
The hearing continues on Monday.
