GUYANA and West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, making his Test debut against Pakistan, continues to fulfil his cricketing dreams and was his team’s most impressive bowler on the second day of the first Test at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. The 25-year-old Berbician finished the day with four wickets from 25 overs which included six maidens with 68 runs coming from his spell.
He was the pick of the West Indies bowlers as their side took a 66-run lead after bowling out the visitors for 160, who were chasing West Indies’ first innings 226.
Speaking with Chronicle Sport after the game, Bishoo declared that he’s having fun playing for the West Indies, but remains focused on helping them to win matches.
Asked how he feels about performing at home, the soft-spoken Bishoo said that it was “nice, performing this well” but added that he was disappointed that his father (deceased) and his mom were not in attendance.
“I had a lot of support from the players, especially Shiv (Chanderpaul), Sars (Ramneresh Sarwan), Sammy, and all the guys and it was nice performing in my homeland, more so at Providence,” Bishoo said.
Since coming into the West Indies team during the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Bishoo has been his side’s trump card. He often had fantasised about playing for the West Indies in front of his home crowd, but said that he felt never under any pressure to keep his high level of performance.
“I just stick to my basics, the normal things that I do and just work hard on my cricket. A lot of people want to play for the West Indies and trust me it’s a remarkable feeling and I’m loving every minute of it,” Bishoo said.
The West Indies will resume today leading Pakistan by 100 runs and an ‘on the board’ score of 34-2 with Lendl Simmons (18) and Kemar Roach (4) at the crease after losing Devon Smith (1) and Darren Bravo (8).
Bishoo is optimistic that his Test debut will be marked with a victory for the ‘Maroon Men’, stating, “We’re in a very good position right now, we just have to stay focused and continue playing good cricket and this win is certain.”
I’m enjoying every minute of it – Bishoo
