THE police on Monday confirmed that the young Amerindian man who died in Sunday’s fatal accident on the Soesdyke Public Road is yet to be identified.

Reports are that the young man, who looks to be in his 20s, was struck down by a vehicle being driven by a police constable, and the body is at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting identification and postmortem.

According to the police, their investigations have revealed that at the time of the accident, the constable was taking an injured colleague in his vehicle, PPP 8497, to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) under the escort of a police vehicle with siren on and emergency lights flashing.

The injured policeman, who has been identified as Constable Gavin Gentle of the Bartica Police Station, had reportedly been involved in an accident earlier in the day, around 02:30hrs to be precise, on the Timehri Public Road.

Reports are that Gentle was proceeding south on the Timehri Public Road in motorcar PTT 5444 when he lost control of it and crashed into a utility pole.

The driver of the escort vehicle has reportedly alleged that while he had managed to avoid hitting the as yet unidentified pedestrian who was in the centre of the road, his colleague, who was following close behind in the Toyota Allion PPP 8497 was not so fortunate.

The victim was picked up and placed in the same vehicle with the injured policeman and taken to the Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, while the injured policeman was treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and admitted in a serious but stable condition.

The police said the driver of PPP 8497 was tested, and no alcohol was detected on his breath. He is in police custody as the investigation continues.
