THE newly re-laid surface of the inner circuit of the National Park will see some cycling action on Saturday, when the seventh annual Universal and General Supplies-sponsored cycle programme, organised by national cycling coach Hassan Mohammed, pedals off. With the annual National Sports Commission Independence three-stage cycle road race being just around the corner, cyclists will be looking to get in lots of competition miles in the saddle apart from training, hence Saturday’s event can be an enthralling one.
Roraima Bikers Club’s (RBC) Alonso Greaves is the defending champion in the Schoolboys and Invitation category, having won last year’s event in a time of 1:28.37 secs and with the previous races at the venue being done under 1:20 mins, Greaves’ time for last year’s race can be bettered.
Robin Persaud, Junior Niles, Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson, Enzo Matthews, Eric Sankar, Warren McKay, Alex Menez, Kurt La Rose, Raymond Newton and Paul De Nobrega are expected to face Joseph Britton for the start of the feature race and at the same time, prevent Greaves from repeating as champion.
The full programme of events for the day which commences at 09:00 h reads: 12 to 14 yrs Boys & Girls (3 laps), BMX Boys 6 to 9 yrs (2 laps), Veteran 0-60 yrs (5 laps), BMX Boys 9 to 12yrs (3 laps), Veteran Under-50 (5 laps), Veteran Over-50 (5 laps), BMX 12-14 (3 laps), BMX Open (3 laps), Juveniles (10 laps), Upright Cyclists (5 laps) and School Boys and Invitation (35 laps).
