NA Prison brawl: alleged sale of improvised weapon sparked killing

The alleged sale of improvised weapons by the inmate who was killed in the New Amsterdam Prison is seen as the motive behind the murder Wednesday evening.

This newspaper understands that the brothers were in possession of an improvised weapon and another inmate wanted to purchase same to
Carry out an attack on another prisoner. However as word spread of the plot the intended target decided to attack the Jagmohan brothers: Neshan Jagmohan who was killed and Ramnarine Jagmohan who is nursing injuries at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

The prisoner along with two others decided to hatch a plan to attack
the brothers before they attacked him. Three persons were held for the attack and are expected to face murder charges soon.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Prison Service has launched an investigation into the incident. Divisional Commander, Ian Amsterdam told the Guyana Chronicle that the investigation will determine what transpired and, when completed, reports will be done by the Police and then submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
This will be done after a post mortem is conducted on the deceased’s body today. On Tuesday afternoon at around 14:30hrs, three murder accused identified as Dillon Boucher, 25 of Haslington, East Coast Demerara, Ramchand Latchman 23, of Number 65 Village, Corentyne, and Rooplall Abrahim of Lot 4 ,Bath Settlement, pounced on the two brothers as they returned from court and dealt them several stab wounds to their bodies with a “Jucka”.
Amsterdam said based on investigations, Neshan was attacked first while his younger brother Ramnarine was in the bathroom. The Divisional Commander related that while Ramnarine was in the bathroom he heard a commotion outside. He then left to see what was occurring and was ambused and attacked.
Ramnarine’s brother was stabbed several times to his neck and chest while he also received wounds in the region of his chest. Neshan died while receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

Meanwhile, Pamilla Jagmohan, mother of the men told the Guyana Chronicle that she has since met with Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels who has assured her that the perpetrators will be penalized for their crimes.
Though she has received assurance from Samuels, the aggrieved mother is calling on both the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Police Force to act quickly. The woman is afraid for her sons. She has another son imprisoned at the New Amsterdam Prison. The 18 year old, Tameshwar Jagmohan who is currently on remand, was charged with four other persons for the Black Push Triple murder.
On July 22, 2016 the bullet riddled bodies of Pawan Chandradeo, 37; his son Jaikarran Chandradeo, 15, both of Mibicuri Creek North, and Naresh Rooplall, 33, of Number 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, were found in the Cookrite Savannah, Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder.
Mrs Jagmohan said, “Them should move him from there and put him somewhere else because we nah know is wah cause this, he nah gun be safe there and he hot head. After me talk back to he and he seh it nah guh end suh, he gon avenge he buddy death…them kill am innocently”.

The woman criticised the judicial system for excessive delays in trying cases while noting that her sons are innocent and are imprisoned because they are poor.
“Neshan was at home at the time when we hear the gunshot; we did not too long ago come back from the prison; he did get release the same afternoon and by time we reach home was night and then them police come and arrest them,” she recounted.
The brothers were charged for the murder of Businessman, Devendra Deodat called “Dave”, of Lot 72 Hampshire Village .The businessman was shot and chopped during an armed robbery at his home on October 13, 2013.
Meanwhile, Ramnarine who remains a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital did not know his brother died during the commotion at the penitentiary. He has reportedly recounted the ordeal to his mother. “He seh when he come from court he put he stuff in the cell and he been in a bathroom and them attack he and them start fuh fight and he tek the bucket in the bathroom and he use da fuh fight them off suh come he alive today” the mother, Pamilla Jagmohan, said.
The mother of four said Ramnarine was unaware that his younger brother was attacked and has died. “When he see me at the hospital he say nah cry, you son nah dead, he alright but when me tell him that Neshan dead he just say “me buddy dead and he blackout”.
She disclosed too that Ramnarine managed to tell investigators who his attackers were and indicated that he “nah get problems with none of them”.
