JUSTICE Roxanne George, one of the two judges assigned to the Demerara Criminal session, inspected a Guard of Honour yesterday to mark the opening of the April Criminal Sessions.
Justice George later took the salute during a march-past of a ceremonial parade after which she and fellow judge Justice Dawn Gregory left to begin their assignments relating to the hearing of a list of 193 cases, including murder, manslaughter, rape, carnal knowledge, incest and narcotics offences.
Justice George, who addressed the jury, told them that they were an important link in the justice system and urged them to do their best to ensure that the system works.
That judge was called upon by prosecutors Mrs. Judith Gildharie-Mursalin and Miss Konyo Sandiford to preside at a case of incest and carnal knowledge of an 11 year-old girl.
But because the accused, who was unrepresented by counsel applied for time to obtain same, the judge granted him until Monday of next week to begin, with or without a counsel.
And in another Court, Justice Dawn Gregory, who was called on by prosecutors Miss Teshana James and Miss Rhondel Weaver to preside at the murder trial of Rayburn Harvey, heard an application from the prosecution for an adjournment to today.
Mr. Ronald Burch-Smith, the lawyer who represented the accused, did not oppose the application and the adjournment was taken to today. The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge and a 12 member jury was empanelled to try the case, which, according to the prosecutor, is not expected to last longer than 10 days.
