GCF/DDL/TOPCO Rapid Chess Tournament …

Meusa is senior champion as Drayton dominates the juniors
WENDELL Meusa showed his supremacy at rapid chess as he demolished all eight of his opponents in this year’s second Guyana Chess Federation (GCF)-organised Demerara Distillers Limited/TOPCO Juices-sponsored rapid chess tournament which was held on Monday at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club.
Meusa scored the maximum eight points from the eight games he won, without any opponent even claiming a draw against him, leaving Shiv Nandalall, Irshad Mohammad and Alexander Duncan to occupy the second, third and fourth place positions on six points each.
The eight-round one-day tournament attracted two dozen chess players, 16 of whom were juniors. Anthony Drayton, student of the Government Technical Institute (GTI), defeated a few seniors as well to emerge winner of the junior category.
He was followed by current national Junior champion and St Stanislaus student, Ron Motilall, with Saeed Ali of Richard Ishmael Secondary and Joshua Pedro of Bishops’ High School copping third and fourth place positions respectively.
Rashad Hussain of Mae’s School came in fifth and he also won the special prize as winner of the shortest game, after he defeated Sue Hai Feng of North Georgetown Secondary in less than five minutes during their encounter.
Each of the eight games entailed a maximum 40 minutes of rapid chess in both junior and senior categories, following which cash prizes and trophies were presented to the respective winners by DDL’s TOPCO representative Marlon Gravesande.
