THE Guyana Squash Association (GSA) is holding its second junior tournament for 2017, the Woodpecker Products Ltd Junior National Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Inc courts.
Play continued on day three with fixtures in nine of the ten categories that are up for grabs. They were several noteworthy performances by all juniors but especially those in the younger age groups.
In the highlight match of the evening Shomari Wiltshire had to come from behind to defeat Alex Cheeks by a three games to one score. ;
Shomari had two games balls in the first game but Alex won the game 13 – 11. Alex then moved to 9 – 6 in the second game and it seemed as if Shomari was in a lot of trouble but he held his nerve and won the next five points to take the second game 11 – 9. Alex now seemed to be tired and Shomari comfortably won the third game 11 – 3 and then the fourth game by an identical score 11 – 3.
In the girls Under 15 category Abosaide Cadogan had a straight set victory over Kirsten Gomes. Abosaide won the first game 11 – 4. The second game was extremely close but Abosaide won it 13 – 11 and then took the third game 11 – 8.
In today’s matches, Christiana Fernandes defeated Isabella Ramjohn 3-0 in ladies U13 action while for the guys, Mohyryan Baksh overcame Dhiren Persaud 3-0 with the same score line applying when Louis Da Silva beat off Persaud.
In the girl U13, both Paige Fernandes and Kirsten Gomes beat Haley Carpenter 3-0 in their respective games while in the Boys class, Ethan Jonas retired to give Demetrius De Abreu the win while Michael Alphonso beat James Mekdeci 3-0; Nicholas Verwey defeated Liam Carpenter 4-1 and De Abreu beat Liam Carpenter 3-0.
Lucas Jonas was also in the winner’s circle of the boys u15 as he beat Jason Gomes 3-0 with Samuel Ince-Carvalhal beating Domininc Collins 3-0 as well. Wiltshire also regisred 3-0 win over Gianni Carpenter with Carpenter then turning around to beat Osmond Mack and Wiltshire advancing past Mikhail Persaud.
