APNU+AFC Region Five Councillor Carol Joseph has resigned from the Regional Democratic CouncilĀ (RDC) with effect from Thursday.
In a letterĀ addressed to the Clerk of theĀ RDC, JosephĀ did not indicate reasons for her resignation, but later in an interview with Guyana Chronicle cited a healthĀ condition as the main reason for herĀ ācalling it a day.ā
Her resignation comes amid an accusation from a nurse at the Fort Wellington Cottage Hospital of her abusing her authority.
Nurse Sherilyn Marks hadĀ accused her of using her position as a regional councillor to get excessive quantities of drugs for her medical condition.
JosephĀ admitted that she had a medicalĀ condition which required frequent treatment, but denied allegations that she was addicted toĀ pain-killing drugs or was being fed large quantities of it.
āIĀ useĀ medicine prescribed by a doctor and I am noĀ addictĀ who requires excessive amounts of medication. Those who know me and associate with me on a daily basis can confirm this.ā
She accusedĀ Nurse Marks of unethical practice, claiming that she did not consent to the release of her personal health information.
āRegardless of whether I am a APNU+AFCĀ councillor or not, her behaviour as a staff nurse/ midwife in releasing informationĀ Ā about my health condition to the press and to social media, to PPP/C MP Harry Gill,Ā has been highly unethicalĀ Ā and thoroughly disgusting and I am now getting legal advice for some form of redress,ā she said.
Marks last year had lodged two complaints against Joseph over her use of authority to acquire excessive pain-killing medication. The letters of complaint were copied to top health, regional and Government officials.
Following the reading ofĀ the resignation by the Clerk,Ā councillors from the APNU+AFC and the PPP/CĀ expressed appreciation to Joseph forĀ her service to theĀ RDCĀ since she became a regional councillor someĀ 10 years ago.
Chairman Vickchand Ramphal said despite their differences,Ā Joseph served the Council well over the years.
