NKRUMAH Bonner scored an unbeaten half-century as the Leeward Islands coasted to a seven-wicket win over the Kent Spitfires in the CWI Regional Super50 tournament on Wednesday.Sent in to bat, the Spitfires failed to get any real momentum at the crease before eventually being dismissed for 216. Gavin Tonge proved to be the chief tormentor of the English batsmen after capturing 4 for 39 as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Opening batsman Bell Drummond lasted 28 balls and scored 18 runs before being dislodged by young pace bowler Alzarri Joseph.
Tonge then struck quickly to remove his opening partner Sean Dickson (22) and the next batsman up Sam Northeast in quick succession – a blow from which the visitors never really recovered. Calum Hagget provided solid batting at the lower end of the order as he top-scored with 45 runs from 92 balls to bring some respectability to the innings.
In their turn at the crease, Montcin Hodge (34) got a solid start but failed to carry on after being dismissed by Adam Riley whose two wickets for the innings was the most for the Spitfires.
Kieran Powell then added 31 before being dismissed by Hugh Bernard, before Bonner hit a patient 78 off 128 balls and proved the catalyst for an easy victory.
