Cosmetologists and barbers are now being trained to provide free counselling and testing to customers in the fight against HIV/ AIDS in their work shops. Coordinator of the Cosmetologist Association of Guyana, Tracey Bailey, explained that this Association not only deals with HIV and AIDS, but also with other pertinent issues that affect society at large.
Bailey said that the Association is in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund and the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association from whom relevant information is accessed to educate cosmetologists and barbers.
Counselling for customers can be provided on topics such as peer pressure, sex and reproductive health, and gender based violence, along with other Sexually Transmitted Infections/ Disease she noted.
Bailey explained that training and counselling are currently ongoing in Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and Ten (Upper Demerara- Berbice).
“At these workshops, participants are trained in counselling and testing. So instead of gossiping on negative topics, we can spread the word of HIV and other relevant topics” Bailey disclosed.
The Coordinator explained that there are only a few salons and barber shops participating in this training and they are working to bring the other barber shops and salons on board.
