THE sum of $1.6 billion has been budgeted this year for technical/vocational education, including, to complete construction of two new tech/voc centres.
Education Minister Shaik Baksh said: “We are hoping we can complete the construction in July, all things being fair, so that classes commence in September and we bolster the delivery of technical and vocational education in Guyana.” The new institutions are at Leonora, West Coast Demerara in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) and at Mahaicony in Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice).
The building of the new centres follows a revision of the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) curriculum to make it more relevant to the world of work.
Subsequently, funds were made available through a US$9.6M Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) funded project to facilitate the erections.
