MAJOR DAMAGE was averted at the Woolford Avenue branch of Tutorial High School yesterday by the quick response of the Guyana Fire Service to a call saying that a grass fire had started at the northern end of the school. The fire reportedly started at around 11:15hrs, and both students and faculty were rushed out of the building to an empty field opposite the school, according to a teacher, Mr. Omine Sobers.
“We saw the smoke first, and then it got worse,” he said, adding: “At first, we did not think it was anything major, but when we realized what happened, the students were evacuated in about five minutes.”
During last year, owing to the El Nino phenomenon, the Guyana Fire Services had to respond to several grass fires, which they successfully contained.
Thankfully, none of them had posed a major threat to the buildings in their environs.
