Dominicans fined for overstaying

Two female nationals of the Dominican Republic were Friday fined by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for failing to comply with the conditions by which they were allowed to stay in Guyana.Anna Diaz, a 25-year-old mother of one and Jalicia Marcanio, a 22-year-old mother of two, pleaded guilty to the separate charges and were fined $30,000 each or should they default on payment they will have to serve 4 weeks imprisonment.
Diaz admitted that between December 1, 2016 and January 10, 2017 at Georgetown she failed to comply with the conditions to which she was permitted to stay in Guyana from October 1, 2016 to November 30, 2016.
Marcanio also confessed that between June 20, 2015 and January 10, 2017 at Georgetown she failed to comply with the conditions to which she was permitted to stay in Guyana from June 5, 2015 to June 20, 2015.
According to the facts which were read in court by Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, both women entered Guyana via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. Diaz arrived on October 1, 2016 and was granted one month stay while upon Marcanio arrival on June 5, 2015 she was given two weeks.
Jones explained that both women were arrested on January 10, 2017 at the Mabaruma Police Checkpoint after police checked their passport and it was discovered that they had overstayed.
The women with the aid of an interpreter told the court that they loved Guyana and wished to stay in the country.
The Magistrate ordered the women to pay the $30,000 fine or serve the default sentence after which they will be deported.
