GEORGETOWN Mayor, Patricia Chase-Greene has announced that all hairdressers, barbers and cosmetologists will be required to be registered under the Town Clerk’s Office next year.Speaking at the City Council’s final statutory meeting for 2016, the mayor said cosmetologists plying their trade on the pavement will not be allowed to do so in 2017.
“There will be no cosmetology done on the streets of Georgetown. 28:01 [The Municipal and District Councils Act, under the Laws of Guyana], clearly states how barbers and hairdressers and cosmetologists must operate in the City of Georgetown,” Chase-Greene said.
She expressed much dissatisfaction in the untidy condition of the City and contends that Georgetown appears to be a “shanty town”.
The mayor stated that regardless of how much the Council may have “flexed” with these cosmetologists because of “economic reasons”, they will not be allowed to make Georgetown seem as though it is a shanty town.
“Therefore they have to make better commitments in keeping their surroundings much cleaner than it is,” she said, adding that “The Council would have made the decision that they should be removed.”
