Protection against flooding…
PEOPLE’S National Congress Reform-One Guyana (PNCR-1G) member of the Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mr. Rudolph Garraway said, at the first 2011 statutory meeting, that Lower Pomeroon farmers, at Aberdeen-Strong Hope, are thankful to the government for the construction work undertaken on the river defence dams. Noting that the project protects their farms from flooding during extreme high tides, he said the dams in the area were badly eroded and Pomeroon River water overflowed the embankments at high tide and flooded cultivations, resulting in tremendous losses to planters.
Garraway said, Tuesday, that, since the intervention through the regional administration, the owners have returned to their plots and have restarted planting.
However, they are appealing to the Ministry of Agriculture for seeds and planting materials, so they can cultivate more lands and contribute to the ‘Grow More Food’ drive in Lower Pomeroon. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
