Teacher charged with demanding money for exam passes

A SCHOOL teacher appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, as recent allegations, about teachers seeking compensation from students to facilitate academic passes, reached the Court.

Rohan Bishop, 24, of lot 117 Meadow Brook Gardens, Georgetown, was charged with demanding money with menace from a student in the school where he teaches.

Particulars of the offence, to which he pleaded not guilty, said the defendant, on June 8, demanded the cash with intent to steal it.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, said Bishop made the demand of the virtual complainant in order for her to secure passes in two subjects at an examination.

The prosecutor successfully applied for an adjournment, indicating that further legal advice is needed in the case, as it is likely that another charge will be laid against the defendant.

Seetaram also objected to bail for Bishop, on the grounds that he may not return for his trial and might interfere with the witnesses.

Bishop was remanded to prison until June 24.

Meanwhile, Police are still making investigations after finding a teacher and a student in an East Bank Demerara hotel, last weekend, following his request for sexual intercourse in exchange for passes.
