Another policeman in Court, on wounding charge

ANOTHER policeman was prosecuted in Court yesterday.

Constable Nigel Craig appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle charged with unlawful wounding.

Craig, 39, of Alness, Corentyne, Berbice, pleaded not guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Delon Smith last March 8.

Smith was also charged with wounding but did not appear and the magistrate said there was nothing to suggest that he knew he had to be present.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, said Craig and Smith were at a fun day drinking when an argument arose between them, resulting in the charges that were advised by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Craig said he was on patrol when about eight men, including Smith, attacked him.

The magistrate asked the policeman who swore to the information in the charge but he replied that he knows nothing about the case.

He pointed out that he was not the investigating officer but was only in Court to swear to the information against Craig, who was released on his own recognizance until July 22.
