A dastardly attempt on the life of Mrs. van Beek

THE dastardly attempt on the life of Mrs. Maria van Beek should be condemned by all in Guyana. But because we are so polarised in Guyana I think it matters not when some are affected. Savagery is allowed to reign in this country depending on which person is the recipient. When voices of reason and justice are raised, there is an onslaught to silence it.

No right thinking person can justify the manner in which Mrs. van Beek was shot. As much as efforts will be made to justify what has happened to her, a word of caution to the wise and those who value their lives in this country. Somewhere in this country, someone knows something about the attempted assassination of Maria van Beek. The government and the police should not let this crime go without being solved. Too many unsolved crimes are the order of the day in Guyana such as Alicia Foster, Monica Reece. In many countries, the Human Rights Commission and other interest groups would have condemned this cowardly act on her life.

On April 22, masked gunmen armed with AK-47s forced their way into Minister of Agriculture Satyadeow Sawh’s home and killed him, along with two relatives and a security guard.

The Guyana Police Force which is headed by the Commissioner of Police and overseen by the Minister of Home Affairs should maintain internal security for all its citizens regardless of race, colour and creed.
