Alpha United off to Haiti for CFU second round clash

ALPHA ‘The Hammer’ United 18-man squad left Guyana yesterday at 11:00 h for Haiti to participate in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Champions Club Cup’s tournament on Sunday.

Alpha United will be looking to continue their fine form from their first match against Tempete of Haiti in the first round in Guyana on March 23.

In that game Alpha were on course to victory when Kevin McKenzie scored an own goal in the 71st minute to ensure Tempete had a goal at the end of regulation time.

The president of the local club, Odinga Lumumba, stated that the team needed strengthening in the mid-field and on the frontline.

Yesterday, however, hours before the team left, Lumumba confirmed that the club had secured the services of the Grenada-based midfielder Kithson Bain and Jamaican striker Anthony Bennett as their loan players.

The team, led by Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, will play against the French-speaking team on Sunday. Earlier, Lumumba stated that the club had also employed the services of Pele’s head coach Denzil Thompson and Gavin Brown as assistant coaches to assist head coach Mervyn ‘Pug’ Wilson.

He said the additional coaches will deal with the tactical aspects for the real game scenario and fitness of the players. Manager of the team Steve Ninvalle and Lumumba agreed that the team looks ready and raring to go against Haiti’s top club.
